Objective and Outcomes: *

Through participation in the course, students will:
*Understand the role of phonological awareness/phonics/word study in the overall literacy curriculum
*Understand the scope and sequence of phonics skills for their grade level as well as how to incorporate small group word study in guided reading for students needing additional phonics skills
*Show the ability to provide whole group phonics lessons at a quick pace
*Provide meaningful independent word-study activities where students are transferring their knowledge of phonics/word study
*Demonstrate their understanding of multi-sensory teaching (using magnetic letters, oral rehearsal)
*Actively participate in weekly classes, discussions, and successfully complete all assignments, including reading that is assigned between classes.
*Demonstrate successful teaching of word study and phonics.
*Compare and contrast existing resources, including the textbooks, Benchmark Phonics and Word Study/Words Their Way.
*Implement suggested activities.
*Share action steps and reflection with the full group.
*Examine your current practice and make necessary adjustments.

Selected articles will be used and provided as needed.

Evaluation and Evidence of Learning and Application: *

Course work and participation will be evaluated by the instructors. Grading will be S/U (successful/unsuccessful) Determination of the final grade is based on the following:
*Reading of the assigned resources and relating the ideas within the readings to designing and delivering effective phonics and word study instruction and practice.
*Class interaction and participation
*Field work (Because this is a summer course, participants may use summer school sessions or make a commitment to implement in the upcoming school year.
