Objective and Outcomes: 

  • Purpose/Goals: 

    • Explore the value of incorporating more independent reading by examining the research, our beliefs, and classroom experiences.
    • Explore the value of whole class texts, a balance between choice and whole class texts, and possible ways to tie together independent reading and whole-class reading,
    • Explore the logistics of implementing independent reading.
    • Explore the reading-writing connection: students writing about their reading and using reading as mentor texts for student writing.
    • Teaching state standards through independent reading.

Evaluation and Evidence of Learning and Application:

  • To receive a passing grade, participants must: 

      • Read provided sources.
      • Participate in bi-monthly discussions.
      • Plan and implement independent reading in their classroom.
      • Reflect through discussion and writing.
      • Share your learning beyond the group.
